don’t ever tell a toddler about something coming in advance

i ordered my boy a new pair of summery sandal water-resistant shoes online, but i made a huge mistake. actually i made two huge mistakes.

first, i asked him which color combination he preferred. blue and green, or orange and grey?

“i want red.”

there is no red. blue/green or orange/grey?

“black and yellow.”

there is no black and yellow.

“then why do that color look black and yellow?”

i don’t know, it’s not right on their website WHY DID I EVER BOTHER ASKING I’M JUST GOING TO ORDER ONE. (the color options in the little boxes, not on the picture of the actual shoe, did indeed look black and yellow.)

the second mistake came when i submitted the order, and then told him, ok i ordered them.

“hooray! new shoes!!! where are they?”

they have to be mailed.

“but i want them now.”

it’s going to take 7-10 days.

“why can’t the mail man bring them NOW”

because it takes time to mail them.

“but I WANT NEW SHOES NOWWWWWWWAGHGHSIDHGIHDG”

you have to go to sleep and wake up 7 times before the shoes come from the mail.

and it’s only been a couple days now, but every morning he keeps asking me “did the mail man bring my new shoes??????”

no.

“but i went to sleep and waked up!!”

you have to do it again 7 more times UGH WHY DID I EVER TELL YOU.

lesson learned: everything in the future will be a surprise. nothing is worth the hype.

  1. hahaha – so cute. “you have to go to sleep and wake up 7 times before the shoes come from the mail.” Love the “waked up.” #funmommy

  2. PLEASE tell my husband this! He has still not learned that you can’t tell children ANYTHING until it is about to happen. The other night, he was excitedly telling the 2-year-old that we’re going to the beach. We’re going in JULY. All we hear about now is “I wanna go sandy beach!!” Argh!
